Published on December 19, 2024, the Statista report on the most popular e-commerce and shopping websites offers a detailed analysis of the top performers in the U.S. market. Amazon.com Dominates the Landscape (45.15%)

In 2023, Amazon.com continued to cement its dominance as the leading online shopping platform in the United States, claiming a 45% of desktop traffic within the e-commerce and shopping subcategory. This makes Amazon an unparalleled giant in the online retail space, far surpassing its nearest competitors. The convenience, extensive product range, and user trust fostered over the years have consistently attracted a massive user base to Amazon.

eBay.com (9.22%) and Walmart.com (5.67%) : Runners-Ups

Following Amazon, eBay.com was the second most visited e-commerce site, garnering 9.22% of the traffic. Walmart.com, a major physical and online retail player, took the third spot with 5.67% percent of web traffic. While significantly trailing behind Amazon, these platforms continue to play pivotal roles in the U.S. online shopping ecosystem by offering unique products and competitive prices.

While not in the top 3, Etsy.com and Target.com hold fourth and fifth places, at 3.97% and 2.42%, respectively.

Why Customers Prefer Amazon

Several factors contribute to Amazon's supremacy:

  1. Search Engine for Products: Amazon has evolved beyond a mere shopping site to become a primary search engine for U.S. consumers. The report reveals that 73 percent of shoppers browse Amazon for inspiration and product discovery. This statistic underscores the platform's role in completing purchases and shaping consumer preferences and shopping decisions.
  2. Product Comparison: About 65 percent of U.S. shoppers use Amazon to look for and compare products. The platform's extensive user reviews, detailed product information, and comparison features simplify decision-making, making it a go-to destination for informed purchases.

Generational Differences in Shopping Behaviors

The report also highlights notable generational differences in shopping behaviors, particularly within the beauty segment. Interestingly, senior consumers (Baby Boomers) are more likely to start their search for beauty products on Amazon. Data indicates that 44% of Baby Boomers initiated their beauty product search on Amazon, suggesting a significant online presence among older demographics, likely due to Amazon's convenience and reliability.

Conversely, the younger generation, particularly Gen Z, shows differing tendencies. Only 35 percent of Gen Z consumers reported starting their beauty product search on Amazon. This demographic may be more inclined towards specialized beauty platforms or social media influencers catering to their interests and beauty trends.
