15 Percent Pledge's Achievement Awards Reveals 2024 Finalists

Google, a titan in the tech industry, has shown its support for this Fifteen Percent Pledge initiative by announcing finalists for grants totalling $250,000 (3rd Prize: $10,000, 2nd Prize: $15,000, 1st Prize: $200,000). These grants are part of Shop with Google's commitment to fostering diversity and supporting Black-owned businesses. The finalists, HanaHana Beauty, Blackstock & Weber, and Soap Distillery, represent diverse industries and exemplify the innovation and excellence found within Black-owned businesses.

The pledge is a call to action for retailers and businesses to dedicate 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned brands, reflecting the approximate percentage of the Black U.S. population. This movement aims to create equitable economic opportunity and address systemic disparities in the retail space.

HanaHana Beauty was founded by Abena Boamah-Acheampong, a visionary who saw the need for a skincare line that provided high-quality, nourishing products and addressed the social and economic disparities faced by women of color. She was inspired to create a brand that would empower these women and give back to the community, particularly by supporting the livelihoods of the women in Ghana who source the ingredients—offering a range of skincare products, including shea butter-based body balms, exfoliating scrubs, and moisturizing oils. Their products are known for being rich in natural ingredients that are ethically sourced from the Shea Belt of Africa, ensuring both quality for users and fair compensation for the women who harvest the shea nuts.

Blackstock & Weber

Chris Echevarria, a designer with a passion for classic menswear and an eye for contemporary design, established Blackstock & Weber. He sought to create a footwear brand that redefined traditional silhouettes with a modern twist, focusing on quality craftsmanship and timeless style. He aimed to offer shoes that spoke to the discerning customer looking for footwear that could make a statement without compromising quality. The company specializes in creating stylish men's footwear, including loafers, brogues, and boots. Each pair is crafted using traditional techniques and high-quality materials, such as leather and suede, ensuring durability and comfort. Blackstock & Weber's shoes stand out for their unique combinations of textures, colors, and patterns, catering to individuals who appreciate footwear that elevates their style.

Soap Distillery was born from Danielle Martin's love for cocktails and her desire to bring a fun, sustainable option to the personal care market. Frustrated by the lack of natural soap options that were both environmentally friendly and creatively inspired, she started crafting her soaps with unique scents that mimicked popular alcoholic beverages. The product line includes a variety of handcrafted soaps with scents inspired by different cocktails, such as Gin, Whiskey, and Beer. They also offer personal care items like lip balms, body oils, and bath salts. All products are made with natural ingredients and are free from harsh chemicals, reflecting the brand's dedication to sustainability and skin-friendly formulations.

As we await the winner's announcement, it's clear that all the finalists are already winners in their own right. The grants Google provides will undoubtedly fuel their growth and help them reach new heights, but the visibility and recognition they receive may be just as valuable.
