Brown Girl Jane is not just a fragrance label, it is a celebration of culture, wellness, and the power of scent to transport, connect, and heal. Achieving a historic milestone in 2024 as the first Black woman-owned fine perfume line to enter Sephora, Brown Girl Jane is now found in leading retailers, including Sephora, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Thirteen Lune. With founders Malaika Jones (CEO), Nia Jones, and Tai Beauchamp at the helm, the brand is on a mission: “We want to touch her in ways that she hasn’t imagined around her wellness journey and make sure it’s a multisensory experience. Let’s just say we have her whole body on lock”.
The Founders of Powerhouse Women on a Mission
Malaika Jones, recognized among the 100 most powerful women by Entrepreneur Magazine, moved from Wall Street to beauty entrepreneurship, bringing both financial acumen and disruptive vision. Her sister and co-founder, Nia Jones, is a force in philanthropic management and diversity. Alongside them, co-founder Tai Beauchamp has anchored the brand’s mission: “There’s this cultural nuance when we conjure up scents in our life [like] going into your grandmother’s home or walking into school.” She continues, “As we are in this space, this is a time where all of us are desiring new wellness practices to feel safe, to feel secure, to feel transported, and to feel light without stress, because that’s what it is for us. It’s about that anti-stress solution”.
Fragrance as Self-Care and Wellness
From its inception, Brown Girl Jane has prioritized self-care, recognizing that “wellness will never just be one thing.” The founders explain, “Our goal is to make sure that whatever is in your toolkit, we’re helping you arm yourself with things that just reduce your stress and make you feel better, more elevated while being grounded and again, rooted in science”. Their fragrances are built to “infuse this wellness component into fragrance and so we’re super excited about that”—a philosophy at the heart of every launch.
Product Launches and Retail Expansion
The much-lauded Wanderlust Collection—a trio of scents inspired by the founders’ favorite getaways to Kenya (Lamu), Brazil (Bahia), and Morocco (Casablanca)—illustrates their belief that scent is “the next best thing” to overseas travel. We developed this really beautifully crafted trio as a love letter to all of our Black and brown women across the world who have inspired us, and the scents take you there, each with totally different scent profiles. The science-backed fragrances were developed in partnership with Firmenich and blend nostalgia with innovation.
Expanding into Sephora with Carnivale Eau de Parfum, the brand has achieved a major milestone with its official launch at Sephora… becoming the first Black woman-owned fine fragrance line to be sold on Sephora’s online platform. Other retail partners—Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Thirteen Lune—demonstrate their mainstream success.
Impact, Accolades, and Community
In 2024, Brown Girl Jane won the $100,000 Sephora Beauty Grant and mentorship through the 15 Percent Pledge Gala, furthering its mission to amplify Black founders. Industry sources anticipate sales between $5 million and $7 million this year, solidifying their position as a major player in the fragrance market. Their business trajectory underscores a powerful blend of community, representation, and commercial achievement.
Looking Ahead: The Future Is Scented
Ever innovation-minded, the brand continues to fuse scent science, culture, and wellness, with plans to “provide solutions for her so that she feels empowered to go do all of the badass things that she does in the world every single day.” In the words of Tai Beauchamp, “It is essential for us to do it in order to perform. For us at BROWN GIRL Jane, knowing that we want to be the go-to, we see ourselves already as the go-to, and we want to continue to provide solutions for her so that she feels empowered to go do all of the badass things that she does in the world every single day.”
With Sephora, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Thirteen Lune—plus a fast-growing direct-to-consumer base—Brown Girl Jane is poised to lead not just in scent, but in the holistic beauty space for years to come.
