In a significant move to boost digital well-being and trust, TikTok has announced a robust collection of technology upgrades and transparency initiatives designed to keep its European community, now more than 200 million strong, safe and informed. These latest efforts combine innovative time management, next-generation AI transparency, and powerful countermeasures against extremism, marking a new era of corporate responsibility and user advocacy.

Industry-First Well-being Features Target Teens and Digital Mindfulness

With more than 100 million pieces of content uploaded to TikTok every day, the responsibility to create a safer environment is bigger than ever. In response, the platform unveiled its Time and Well-being space, an industry-first approach to helping users relax, reset, and build mindful digital habits. Early testing found that people are returning to this new center at significantly higher rates than the previous screen time settings. This success is particularly vital for the app’s youngest users, as teen accounts come preset with over 50 safety, privacy, and security settings to protect their creative experience and social learning by default.

As part of its ongoing efforts to engage with and protect young people, TikTok will make a $100,000 contribution in 2026 to the Tech Coalition’s SafeOnline Research Fund. This investment aims to fuel research at the intersection of young people’s digital experiences and broader online safety frameworks, further solidifying TikTok’s role as an active force in the digital wellness conversation.

AI Transparency: Accountability for the Content Revolution

The transformative potential of artificial intelligence has revolutionized the creation and distribution of content across various platforms. Recognizing both the risks and opportunities, TikTok is doubling down on transparent, responsible AI use. The platform has rolled out a suite of tools and labelling protocols to mark and explain AI-generated content (AIGC), making the origins of each video, image, or soundbite clearer to viewers than ever before. As the company stated publicly, “the best way to create positive experiences for our community is when humans and technology work together,” underscoring a growing industry movement toward greater openness and responsible digital citizenship.

New European rules, including the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act and Digital Services Act (DSA), are pushing all major platforms to better label, manage, and explain AI-generated media. For creators, this means a renewed emphasis on honest labelling, while brands must be extra vigilant about AI ethics during collaborations and campaigns.

Combatting Hate Speech and Extremism: New Partnerships and Proactive Policing

Beyond content moderation, TikTok is also scaling up its defenses against hate and violent extremism. The company has deployed advanced tactics to detect and remove networks dedicated to spreading hateful content, leveraging both machine learning and expert human moderators. The company is also providing new levels of detail and openness through its Transparency Center, where stakeholders can see precisely how harmful or misleading behaviors are identified, flagged, and taken offline.

In tandem, TikTok has entered a partnership with the Violence Prevention Network, an organization laser-focused on stopping violent extremism at its roots. The company has also reaffirmed its membership in the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, deepening its collaborations with peers and governments to safeguard users from emerging digital threats.

Setting New Regulatory Standards: European Data and User Rights

These sweeping reforms come as TikTok faces heightened scrutiny from European regulators. The platform’s updated terms, effective July 25, 2025, expand both dispute resolution options and strict content guidelines to further protect against misinformation, violence, discrimination, and inauthentic commercial behavior. For data handling, TikTok is investing over €12 billion under Project Clover to ensure user information from its 175 million European users stays securely within European data centers.

The latest suite of safety and well-being features was introduced at the European Trust and Safety Forum in Dublin. The high-profile event brought together journalists, creators, and digital policy experts from across the continent to discuss responsible technology, the future of AI, and urgent community challenges.
