CVS customers across the United States may soon find their neighborhood pharmacy closing its doors, as the retail giant confirmed it will shutter 270 locations in 2025. The move is part of a sweeping, multi-year restructuring plan aimed at streamlining operations and adapting to shifting consumer behaviors.

Why CVS Is Closing More Stores

This latest round of closures follows the shutdown of approximately 900 CVS stores between 2022 and 2024.

According to a CVS spokesperson, the company is “realigning our retail footprint, reducing store density and optimizing our existing stores and pharmacies.” The closures are being made strategically, based on “changes in population, consumer buying patterns and future health needs” rather than as a reaction to market pressures.

A statement from CVS emphasized that decisions are driven by “demographic changes, consumer purchasing trends, store and pharmacy concentration, access to pharmacy care, and community health requirements.” The company says this approach will help better meet customer demands and improve efficiency.

Impact on Shoppers and Communities

While the closure of hundreds of stores may be unsettling for loyal customers, CVS notes that 85% of Americans will still have a CVS location within 10 miles of their home even after the 2025 closures. The company has not released a complete list of affected stores, but outlets like The Krazy Coupon Lady and local media have compiled partial lists based on community announcements.

CVS’s Evolving Retail Strategy

Despite the closures, CVS is not retreating from brick-and-mortar retail entirely. The company plans to open nearly 30 new locations in 2025, including stores inside Target and smaller-format pharmacies under 5,000 square feet, designed to offer both full-service pharmacy care and select over-the-counter products. Between 2022 and 2024, CVS opened 100 new stores, demonstrating a commitment to serving areas with unmet demand.

This recalibration reflects broader trends in the pharmacy sector, as rivals like Walgreens and Rite Aid also reduce their store counts in response to online competition and changing consumer preferences. CVS’s strategy includes expanding integrated healthcare services, reducing store density in saturated markets, and investing in new, more agile formats to better serve evolving customer needs.

What’s Next for CVS Shoppers

Although the company is closing hundreds of stores, CVS remains focused on ensuring convenient access to pharmacy care nationwide. As the retail landscape shifts, customers can expect to see new store concepts and expanded health services, even as some familiar locations close their doors.
