e.l.f. Cosmetics, has released Vanity Vandals, a 10 minute true crime inspired mockumentary that investigates the growing epidemic of “vanity vandalism,†defined by e.l.f. as the act of overtaking shared bathroom counters with irresistibly affordable beauty products. The film follows Cosmetic Criminals, e.l.f.’s 2024 production that highlighted an “e.l.f. pinching epidemic,†and continues the brand’s strategy of using long form entertainment to enter cultural conversation.
A Hollywood Premiere for a Beauty Brand
Rather than a standard social campaign launch, e.l.f. gave Vanity Vandals a full theatrical debut at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, complete with a red carpet hosted by Ellen K of iHeartMedia‘s KOST 103.5, a live watch party on the @elfyou Twitch channel, and a digital activation in e.l.f.UP! on Roblox, and a Q&A with the director and cast. Directed by Alex Buono, the film follows Detective Bob Fleck, played by Gary Kraus, and behavioral profiler Dr. Erika Sparrow, played by Christina Chang, as they investigate a series of escalating vanity crimes, including a newlywed couple played by Phoebe Dynevor and Christopher Sky, whose cluttered shared sink becomes the focal point of the investigation.
Rooted in Real Consumer Behavior
The mockumentary is built on real consumer data. Nearly 1 in 5 people report having ended a relationship over a partner’s bathroom habits, and the broader conversation around makeup mess has generated 115 million views on TikTok for #makeupmess, 1.3 million for #messyvanity, and 1.2 million+ for #messysink.Â
Patrick O’Keefe, Chief Integrated Marketing Officer at e.l.f., said, “We saw this growing conversation around messy shared bathroom spaces and beauty routines, and we knew we had to show them we were listening in a way that is unmistakably e.l.f.â€
Limited Bundles and a Contest to Match
To tie commerce directly to the campaign, e.l.f. is releasing two exclusive limited time bundles on elfcosmetics.com: the “Criminally Good†Blush Bundle featuring two shades of Camo Liquid Blush and Primer Infused Matte Blush, and the “Criminally Obsessed†Boo Bundle featuring 10 holy grail lippies. Alongside the film launch, e.l.f. has opened its “Save Our Sink†Contest from April 2 through April 16, inviting consumers to submit their most chaotic bathroom stories for a chance to win a grand prize valued at over $10,000, including a year’s worth of e.l.f. Holy Grails, a vanity design consultation, and a $5,000 gift card redeemable at Target.
