Superplants & Regeneratively Farmed Skincare: Thrive Natural Care CEO Alex McIntosh

In the bustling world of skincare, one name stands out for its commitment to natural and regenerative products - Thrive Natural Care. At the helm is Alex McIntosh, a visionary leader who has transformed his personal struggles with sensitive skin into a mission to provide affordable, effective skincare solutions that are also good for the planet. Today, we are privileged to bring you an exclusive interview with McIntosh, the co-founder and CEO of Thrive Natural Care.

From its headquarters in San Francisco, California, Thrive Natural Care has been making its mark in the skincare industry, harnessing the power of superplants including traditional Costa Rican botanicals to deliver powerful results. In this candid conversation, McIntosh shares insights into the journey of Thrive Natural Care, from its inception to its current success. He delves into the unique beauty business model the company's operations, the passion that fuels his work, and the impact of their regenerative farming practices on farmer communities.

1. Alex, can you share with us the story behind your decision to establish Thrive Natural Care and how your personal struggles with sensitive skin influenced this journey?

"Always having sensitive skin, I had tried so many products to promote my skin health over the years. The problem is that many of the products still had harsh chemicals and unnatural ingredients. As someone that is passionate about our global environment, I knew there had to be a better way to produce skincare products that were simultaneously better for skin and the environment."

2. Can you explain the concept of regenerative farming and how it contributes to the creation of superior skincare products at Thrive?

"Regenerative farming places a focus on restoring and enhancing the health of ecosystems and the soil, rather than just sustaining current production levels. It is a holistic and sustainable farming method that aims to improve soil quality, increase biodiversity, enhance water retention, and reduce environmental impact. The ultimate goal of regenerative farming is to create resilient and self-sustaining agricultural systems that can adapt to changing conditions while providing essential crops."

"The superplants that we grow are helping to achieve two major goals: creating better skincare products and having a positive impact on the soil in Costa Rica and on the lives of our partner farmers. By utilizing the formulas we have developed, we are able to incorporate these ingredients into our line of products and have the positive impact we have always strived to achieve."

3. How does Thrive Natural Care's approach to regenerative farming differ from conventional farming methods?

"Traditional farming, even in the modern day is focused on sustainability. Regenerative farming goes beyond sustainability and helps to improve, not just maintain, soil health and crop diversity, all while preventing soil erosion and other negative effects that traditional farming methods create."

Corralillo Plant

4. Can you tell us more about the superplants used in Thrive's products? How do these plants contribute to the effectiveness of your skincare line?

"There are a few that we use, and there are benefits derived from each: Corralillo is a medicinal plant that soothes inflammation and heals skin. For sun damaged skin, this is a wonderful benefit. Juanilama is often used in tea, but also has both restorative properties and is antibacterial. Fierrillo is an anti-oxidant rich vine both protects and heals skin, and has been used to treat ingrown hairs and blemishes. The true magic comes from not just the superplants, but how they are formulated in our products."

5. Can you discuss the role of biodiversity in Thrive's regenerative farming practices and How does the role of biodiversity in Thrive's regenerative farming practices impact the quality of your skincare products?

"With respect to biodiversity and its role in regenerative farming, it is key to several goals. Some of these include improving soli health and fertility through nutrient cycling, increasing resilience to pests and diseases by fostering a range of insects, and encouraging pollination, as biodiverse ecosystems create a more suitable environment for bees and other pollinating insects."

"With respect to how this plays a role in our skincare products, by increasing the health of the superplants we use, we are also increasing their potency and effectiveness for skin health."

6. Lastly, what makes Thrive Natural Care stand out in the crowded skincare market? What unique value does your brand bring to consumers who are increasingly conscious about the environmental impact of their purchases?

"One of our core beliefs is to "leave it better." In utilizing regenerative farming, we are leaving the soil and earth better than when we found it. With respect to skin, we are leaving skin better than when we found it, and when it comes to our customers, we are leaving our relationships better than when we first engaged with them."

"We consider this a baseline for what we do. Yes, I believe strongly that we produce and sell the best skincare products, but to truly differentiate ourselves, we encourage our customers and consumers to join us on our journey to better skin health and a better planet. By doing this, we are helping customers understand that their purchase of Thrive comes with benefits outside and beyond healthier skin."
