AI Tips for Free Media Coverage for Small Retailers

For years, the PR industry has been one of the most gatekept spaces in marketing. As a small business owner without deep pockets, I learned this the hard way when I started out. Traditional PR agencies wanted $10,000 a month with six-month commitments — money that most of us bootstrapping founders simply don't have.

But here's the thing — journalists don't want to talk to PR reps. They want to talk to you, the founder with the real story and passion behind your brand. Your voice matters, and your authentic journey is what makes compelling content.

After cracking the code on getting major media coverage without an agency (think Forbes, Apartment Therapy, and even Oprah's Favorite Things), I realized something profound: PR isn't rocket science. It's about writing a relevant pitch and sending it to the right person.

And now with AI, it's never been easier for small retailers to cut their PR time in half and get the visibility they deserve without the excessive cost. Here's how.

Why Organic PR Matters More Than Ever for Retailers

Before diving into the how-to, let's get real about why this matters. Marketing is you talking about yourself. PR is your industry talking about you. That third-party credibility builds trust in ways ads simply can't.

For retailers specifically, organic PR delivers three crucial benefits:

  1. Credibility beyond paid ads: When customers discover your products through a trusted publication rather than an ad, they're more likely to see your brand as legitimate and worthy of their dollars.
  2. SEO that compounds over time: Unlike ads that disappear the moment you stop paying, PR features continue working for you through search engines for years.
  3. Relationship-building that opens doors: One feature often leads to more, creating ripple effects that can transform your business trajectory.

Three Free AI Tools Cutting My PR Time in Half

1. Perplexity AI: Finding Who to Pitch

PR begins with knowing exactly who to pitch. Perplexity AI, a better than google web search tool, has become my secret weapon for this research phase.

Unlike traditional search engines, Perplexity gives you concise, specific answers about which publications cover businesses like yours. For example, if you own a candle shop, simply ask:

  • "What types of gift guides does Apartment Therapy publish for home fragrance products?"
  • "Which journalists have written about sustainable candle brands in the past year?"
  • "What podcasts feature independent retail store owners?"

The tool instantly compiles this information, saving hours of manual research. I've had clients go from zero visibility to featured in major publications by starting with this targeted research.

For retailers specifically, you can ask highly specific questions like: "Which publications have holiday gift guides featuring products under $50 for sustainable home goods?" This precision ensures you're not wasting time pitching outlets that aren't relevant to your products.

2. ChatGPT: Crafting Follow-Ups and Analyzing Performance

While I recommend learning how to write your initial pitch yourself, and I have a free training about this at www.gloriachoupr.com/masterclass, ChatGPT excels at crafting follow-up emails and helping you get responses from editors and writers.

Here's how I use it with my retail clients:

For follow-ups: After sending initial pitches, use ChatGPT to draft follow-up emails that add value without being pushy. For example: "I sent you a pitch about my sustainable home goods last week. Since then, our bamboo dish set was featured in [Local Publication]. I'd love to share more about our zero-waste manufacturing process if that aligns with your upcoming sustainability coverage."

For speaking improvement: After podcast appearances or interviews, upload the transcript to ChatGPT and ask:

  • "What questions did the host ask me to clarify?"
  • "Where could I have been more succinct or provided better examples?"
  • "What stories resonated most with the interviewer?"

This feedback loop has helped my clients dramatically improve their media presence over time, making them more attractive for future features, and become better speakers overall. ChatGPT can give you a scorecard or checklist with talking points and things to remember for future interviews!

3. Journalist Request Platforms: Sources of Sources, HARO, and Substack

The third component isn't technically AI, but these platforms work beautifully with AI tools to create a powerful PR system you can take in house without hiring an agency, while getting consistent PR features that help boost your sales, SEO and brand visibility.

Sites like Sources of Sources (formerly HARO), Help a Reporter Out, and journalist Substacks are goldmines for retail business owners. Journalists literally post what they're working on and ask for sources to feature.

The key is responding quickly — which is where ChatGPT comes in. When you see a relevant request, use ChatGPT to help draft a concise, on-point response that highlights your expertise.

For example, if a journalist is looking for eco-friendly gift ideas under $30, you can have ChatGPT help structure your response highlighting your products' sustainability features, price points, and what makes them unique holiday gifts.

Real Results: From Invisible to Featured

The beauty of this system is that it works regardless of your size or budget. One of my clients, a small handmade jewelry designer with fewer than 500 Instagram followers, used this exact approach to land features in major publications including Forbes, Good Housekeeping, and three podcast appearances in just two months.

Another client, a sustainable home goods retailer, went from zero media mentions to being featured in holiday gift guides across six different publications after implementing this system.

The common thread? Neither spent a dime on PR agencies. They simply learned how to leverage these tools effectively with their busy schedules.

Getting Started: Your Three-Step Plan

If you're feeling inspired to try this approach, here's your action plan:

  1. Do your homework first: Use Perplexity AI to identify 5-10 relevant publications, podcasts, or journalists who cover businesses like yours.
  2. Create a simple pitch template: Learn the fundamentals of a good pitch (I offer a free masterclass on this at gloriachoupr.com/masterclass).
  3. Set up a system: Sign up for journalist request platforms like Sources of Sources and block 30 minutes twice weekly to scan for opportunities and respond quickly.

Remember, PR isn't about blasting the same message to hundreds of contacts. It's about making meaningful connections with the right people at the right time with the right story relevant to that season.

Beyond the Tools: The Human Element Still Matters

While AI tools can dramatically reduce the time and complexity of PR, the human element remains crucial. Your authentic voice, unique story, and genuine passion for your business are what will ultimately make journalists want to feature you.

The best AI-assisted pitches still sound like they came from a real person with real experiences and insights. Use these tools to enhance your efficiency, not replace your humanity.

Your Visibility Matters

As small business owners, especially women entrepreneurs who may have been taught to keep our heads down or not take up space, claiming our visibility can feel uncomfortable. But your story deserves to be told. Your products deserve to be seen. And your expertise deserves recognition.

PR isn't just about exposure — it's about owning your place in the market with confidence and authority.
