Advance shipping notice (ASN)

RETAILBOSS ReferenceUpdated November 2, 2026

An advance shipping notice is a message sent before a delivery that describes the goods and shipment expected to arrive.

How it works in retail

It can include order references, quantities, packaging and transport details. Retailers use it to plan receiving and match arriving goods against records.

A retail example

A supplier sends an ASN listing the cartons and units dispatched against a retailer’s purchase order.

What to keep in mind

A shipping notice is not confirmation that the retailer received the goods. Receiving checks should identify shortages, damage and discrepancies.

Examples are illustrative. Terminology and measurement conventions can vary by business and market.
