Last-mile delivery

RETAILBOSS ReferenceUpdated November 2, 2026

Last-mile delivery is the final stage of transporting an order from a local fulfilment point to the customer or designated collection location.

How it works in retail

The term refers to the final delivery leg, regardless of its physical length. It includes routing, handover and delivery-status information.

A retail example

A parcel moves from a local delivery depot to a customer’s apartment after travelling through a wider distribution network.

What to keep in mind

Fast dispatch and fast delivery are different measures. Access problems, failed attempts and inaccurate addresses can affect the final handover.

Examples are illustrative. Terminology and measurement conventions can vary by business and market.
