Units per transaction (UPT)

RETAILBOSS ReferenceUpdated November 2, 2026

Units per transaction is the average number of product units sold in each completed transaction.

How it works in retail

It is calculated by dividing included units sold by the corresponding number of transactions. The reporting treatment of returns and cancelled sales should be consistent.

A retail example

A shop sells 420 units across 200 transactions. Its UPT is 2.1 for that period.

What to keep in mind

UPT measures quantity, while average order value measures money. Selling more low-priced or heavily discounted units can raise UPT without improving margin.

Examples are illustrative. Terminology and measurement conventions can vary by business and market.
