Founded in West Philadelphia in the early 1970s, Free People began as a small boutique started by Richard Hayne, Judy Wicks, and Scott Belair. The store initially offered an eclectic mix of plants, records, and clothing to cater to the youthful, bohemian clientele of the area.

In 1971, the store underwent a significant transformation, rebranding itself as Urban Outfitters, signaling the start of a broader vision. By 1976, Urban Outfitters, Inc. was incorporated, beginning substantial growth. However, the Free People name was not forgotten. In 1984, it was revived as a wholesale label under the newly formed URBN conglomerate, setting the stage for its future success.
