Pop-up shop

RETAILBOSS ReferenceUpdated November 2, 2026

A pop-up shop is a temporary retail location opened for a defined period, event, product launch or market test.

How it works in retail

Pop-ups range from short installations inside another store to leased spaces operating for several months. Their objectives can include sales, product feedback and local customer acquisition.

A retail example

A jewellery brand runs a six-week holiday shop to sell gifts and learn which products local shoppers request.

What to keep in mind

A temporary opening still requires a workable stock, staffing and operating plan. Foot traffic or social attention alone does not establish that the activation was profitable.

Examples are illustrative. Terminology and measurement conventions can vary by business and market.
