Preorder

RETAILBOSS ReferenceUpdated November 2, 2026

A preorder is an order accepted before an item is available for immediate fulfilment.

How it works in retail

Retailers may use it for upcoming collections, made-to-order goods or confirmed future deliveries. Payment timing and fulfilment expectations should be stated clearly.

A retail example

A boutique accepts orders for a coat expected to arrive next month and provides the estimated dispatch period before purchase.

What to keep in mind

Preorders are not the same as ready-to-ship stock. Changes to delivery estimates, cancellation rights and refund handling must follow the stated terms and applicable rules.

Examples are illustrative. Terminology and measurement conventions can vary by business and market.
