Product information management (PIM)

RETAILBOSS ReferenceUpdated November 2, 2026

Product information management is the process and software used to organize, enrich and distribute product information across selling channels.

How it works in retail

A PIM can hold descriptions, attributes, dimensions and media references. Teams prepare channel-ready product records from a consistent source.

A retail example

A retailer updates a coat’s material composition once and distributes the approved information to its website and marketplace listings.

What to keep in mind

A PIM manages product content; it is not automatically the source of live inventory, selling prices or order status.

Examples are illustrative. Terminology and measurement conventions can vary by business and market.
