Sourcing

Supplier

RETAILBOSS ReferenceUpdated November 2, 2026

A supplier is a business or individual that provides goods or services to another organization.

How it works in retail

In retail, suppliers can include brands, manufacturers, distributors and service providers. Their responsibilities depend on the agreed product, service and delivery terms.

A retail example

An independent brand supplies finished jewellery to a boutique, while a separate company supplies its packaging.

What to keep in mind

Supplier does not necessarily mean manufacturer. Establish who makes the product, who sells it and who is responsible for delivery and quality.

Examples are illustrative. Terminology and measurement conventions can vary by business and market.
