Supply chain

Supply chain

RETAILBOSS ReferenceUpdated November 2, 2026

A supply chain is the network of organizations, activities and resources involved in making a product available to its customer.

How it works in retail

It connects inputs, production, transport, storage and distribution, as well as returns. Retailers often participate in several overlapping supply chains across their assortment.

A retail example

A garment moves from fabric production to manufacturing, distribution, a retailer and the final customer, with several suppliers and service providers involved.

What to keep in mind

A supply chain is broader than transport alone. Product information, ordering, payments and coordination also connect the participating businesses.
