Shopify Extends Shop Pay to Claude Duet Beyond Shopify-Hosted Stores

The payment expansion does not require a retailer to rebuild its checkout around an agent-specific integration. Shopify’s developer documentation describes a system that issues single-use payment credentials for an approved transaction and uses the merchant’s existing card checkout.

For retailers outside Shopify, the practical change is a potential new route to an existing checkout—not a migration to Shopify’s storefront software. Access is limited. Anthropic’s Shop Pay guidance identifies Duet as a research preview for US Pro and Max subscribers.

The wallet is not currently available through the regular Claude experience, Cowork or Claude Code. Users connect it through Duet’s payment settings and approve each purchase before payment proceeds. That approval produces credentials scoped to the purchase rather than giving the agent a reusable card number.

Some websites may still block agent-assisted payment or require the shopper to finish manually, so compatibility should not be treated as universal.
