Stone Island Turns its Ravarino Headquarters into The Lab, an Integrated System Where Design and Research Evolve Together
Stone Island has completed the renovation of its historic headquarters in Ravarino, transforming the site into an integrated ecosystem where design and research operate in direct dialogue. Internally referred to as “The Lab”, this approach defines the methodology through which the brand’s activities take shape, aligning creative practice with a scientific, experimental process that sits at the core of Stone Island’s identity.
Within this framework, the Ravarino headquarters functions as a living laboratory. Design teams and material researchers work side by side, continuously scrutinising and testing fibres, fabrics, dyes and treatments to push the boundaries of performance and appearance. By embedding experimentation into everyday workflows, Stone Island ensures that innovation is not an occasional project but a constant, iterative practice one that directly informs the garments seen on streets, stadiums and runways around the world.
The architectural intervention at Ravarino preserves and amplifies the site’s original industrial character. The existing…
structural skeleton, exposed concrete, cement resin flooring and north-facing sheds have all been retained, reinforcing a sense of openness and continuity across the buildings.
These elements keep the connection to the area’s industrial design heritage intact, while providing the natural light, generous volumes and flexible spaces needed for large-scale research, garment-dyeing and prototype development.
By choosing to enhance rather than erase the factory’s past, Stone Island underlines how its aesthetic and philosophy grow out of real industrial spaces, not abstract concepts.
The renovated headquarters becomes a physical expression of the brand’s manifesto captured in projects like “The Compass Inside” where the relationship between lab and life, and between how Stone Island is made and how it is worn, is always in focus.
