Sophia Amoruso’s keen sense of fashion and business acumen in just six years propelled Nasty Gal from her bedroom to generate $100 million in annual revenue. Here are ten interesting tidbits about the brand that you might not know:

Humble Beginnings: Nasty Gal started as an eBay store named “Nasty Gal Vintage,” selling used vintage clothing from the back of an ’87 Volvo. Sophia Amoruso, at 22, managed this venture while working as a security guard at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University.

Rapid Growth: Sophia grew Nasty Gal from her bedroom to a business generating $100 million in annual revenue in just six years. Her keen sense of fashion and understanding of her target audience fueled this meteoric rise. Name Origin: “Nasty Gal” was inspired by a 1975 album by funk singer and style icon Betty Davis.

Interestingly, the original NastyGal.com domain belonged to a porn company, leading to some initial confusion about the nature of the business. First Big Hire: Sophia made her first significant hire through Craigslist, showcasing her resourcefulness and unconventional approach to building her team.

Controversies: Nasty Gal faced several controversies, including a 2015 lawsuit alleging the wrongful termination of four employees due to pregnancy, which violated California laws.
