Penhaligon’s Thinks the Real Fragrance Challenge in China is Understanding, Not Discovery
To celebrate 10 years of the Portraits collection, Penhaligon’s has created an exhibition around 13 fragrances and 13 characters, imagined as one eccentric family filled with secrets and rivalries. Visitors move through character rooms and banquet style scenes that introduce each persona before they ever reach the fragrance testing area. In each space, the brand uses decor, storytelling, and atmosphere to make its “complex” portfolio easier to grasp.
Every fragrance is given a personality and a relationship to the others. Illustrated scent cards, limited gifts, and even ice cream flavours inspired by the collection reinforce those identities in playful, sensory ways. By the time guests arrive at the testing area, the scents are no longer just liquids in bottles; they belong to characters visitors have already “met,” which makes them easier to remember and compare.
The exhibition itself is not particularly large, and can be experienced in about 20 minutes.…
But in that short time, it manages to turn product education into character discovery.
Instead of pushing visitors to ask “Which perfume do I like?”, the journey nudges them toward a different question: “Which character feels most like me?” That shift from simple discovery to deeper understanding and self identification is arguably the most effective part of the activation, and one that speaks directly to how fragrance is evolving in the China market.
In a landscape where storytelling often drives discovery, Penhaligon’s shows that the real value appears when a narrative helps someone recognise a scent as their own, and carry that sense of identity beyond the exhibition walls.
