Stone Island’s New Rome Store Turns a Traditional Palazzo Into a Hyperblock Driven Community Space
Stone Island has opened a new store on Via del Babuino in Rome, conceived as a place where architecture, product and community converge inside a historic palazzo. The space introduces a new spatial language that balances innovation with respect for the building’s original fabric, continuing the brand’s collaboration with OMA/AMO on its global store concept.
At the heart of the project is the Hyperblock, a sculptural intervention developed to unify the fragmented layout of the palazzo into a continuous retail experience. Carved from cork and treated to emphasise its texture, the Hyperblock threads through the interior, acting as a connective spine that links rooms, levels and sightlines. It creates a clear spatial hierarchy while still allowing the building’s layered history to remain visible.
The Rome store has been conceived as a community oriented space as much as a retail environment. Architecture, product and people are brought together through a sequence…
of rooms that showcase Stone Island’s research driven collections alongside special projects and installations. The design language emphasises material honesty and experimentation, echoing the brand’s long standing focus on fabric innovation, dyeing techniques and functionality. Custom designed elements deepen this narrative.
A display trunk by Elvis Wesley, lighting by Tim Hooijmans, a table and stools by Tim Teven, and audio systems developed by Ledongil Workshop all contribute to a cohesive interior landscape.
Each piece comes from designers whose work reflects Stone Island’s commitment to research, craftsmanship and innovation, turning fixtures into part of the storytelling rather than simple retail props.
Conceived in collaboration with OMA/AMO, the store forms part of a broader global strategy that sees Stone Island using architecture as a medium to express its culture of research and community.
