Stuart Machin

Early Career and Retail Foundation Born in 1970 in Kent, England, Stuart Machin’s journey to the top of British retail began at age 16 as a shelf stacker at Sainsbury’s Savacentre near Gillingham.

Earning £3.80 per hour, he originally planned to teach religious studies after university, but the excitement of retail captured his imagination. His career trajectory included senior posts at Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Asda, building expertise across multiple formats and laying the groundwork for future leadership.

International Experience and M&S Journey Machin broadened his leadership scope overseas, moving to Australia as operations director of Coles for Wesfarmers, then serving as managing director for Target Australia.
