Penhaligon’s Thinks the Real Fragrance Challenge in China is Understanding, Not Discovery

To celebrate 10 years of the Portraits collection, Penhaligon’s has created an exhibition around 13 fragrances and 13 characters, imagined as one eccentric family filled with secrets and rivalries. Visitors move through character rooms and banquet style scenes that introduce each persona before they ever reach the fragrance testing area. In each space, the brand uses decor, storytelling, and atmosphere to make its “complex” portfolio easier to grasp.

Every fragrance is given a personality and a relationship to the others. Illustrated scent cards, limited gifts, and even ice cream flavours inspired by the collection reinforce those identities in playful, sensory ways. By the time guests arrive at the testing area, the scents are no longer just liquids in bottles; they belong to characters visitors have already “met,” which makes them easier to remember and compare.

The exhibition itself is not particularly large, and can be experienced in about 20 minutes.…
