Iris Apfel was an American businesswoman, interior designer, fashion designer, and actress, renowned for her flamboyant style and outspoken personality. Born on August 29, 1921, in Astoria, Queens, New York City, she was the only child of Samuel Barrel and his Russian-born wife, Sadye "Syd" Barrel. Apfel's unique approach to fashion often involved mixing haute couture with oversized costume jewelry, creating witty and exuberantly idiosyncratic looks.
Her career in textiles began when she and her husband Carl launched Old World Weavers in 1950, specializing in reproducing antique fabrics and taking part in restoration projects, including work at the White House for nine presidents. Apfel's eye for design and ability to source rare items led her to become a celebrated figure in the design world, with celebrity clients such as Estee Lauder and Greta Garbo.

Apfel's influence extended beyond her professional work. She became a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin and was featured in a documentary by Albert Maysles, highlighting her life and style. In 2019, at 97, she signed a modeling contract with global agency IMG. Her legacy includes a Barbie doll created in her image, making her the oldest person ever to have a Barbie made after them.
Apfel passed away on March 1, 2024, at her estate in Palm Beach, Florida, at the age of 102.
