Pierpaolo Piccioli was born on August 29, 1967, in Nettuno, a seaside town near Rome, Italy. Originally pursuing literature at Sapienza University, he pivoted to fashion when he transferred to Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome, graduating in 1989. In the early 1990s, Piccioli joined Fendi as a designer in their accessories department, where he collaborated closely with Maria Grazia Chiuri. Their partnership was instrumental in shaping Fendi’s leather goods division prior to their move to Valentino in 1999.
From 2008 to 2016, Piccioli and Chiuri served as co-creative directors at Valentino, redefining the house’s visual language to connect heritage craft with contemporary romance. When Chiuri departed for Dior in 2016, Piccioli assumed sole creative direction, pushing further into inclusive casting, emotional storytelling, and sculptural haute couture. Under his leadership, the brand amplified diversity, social activism, and the fusion of tradition with boundary-pushing modernity. Highlights of his tenure included viral collections such as Pink PP, red-carpet domination, and global art collaborations; Piccioli won Designer of the Year twice, in 2018 and 2022 at the British Fashion Awards.
Appointment at Balenciaga In 2025, French luxury conglomerate Kering announced that Piccioli would succeed Demna Gvasalia as Creative Director of Balenciaga, effective July 10, 2025.
Balenciaga and Kering praised Piccioli’s unique creative vision and extensive experience, a move perceived as a strategic pivot to reclaim Parisian couture purity and move the house beyond the provocations of Demna’s reign.
Creative Philosophy and Early Impact Piccioli’s tenure at Balenciaga began with a study of Cristóbal Balenciaga’s origins in Getaria, Spain, and a return to the soul of luxury.
“What I am receiving is a brand full of possibilities that is incredibly fascinating… This gives me the chance to shape a new version of the maison, adding another chapter with a new story,” Piccioli stated at the time of his appointment…
